Understanding the Five Elements 

Bazi is a highly sophisticated discipline rooted in the traditions of Imperial Feng Shui.A fundamental principle of Feng Shui is the theory of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. 

​​These elements interact through two primary cycles: the  Generative cycle and the Destructive cycle.

Known in Chinese philosophy as Wu Xing, this Five-Phase theory suggests that the structure of the cosmos mirrors the interactions of these five phases. Each phase is associated with a complex set of correspondences found throughout nature.

The Five Elements are applied not only in Feng Shui but also in traditional Chinese medicine, astrology, music, military strategy, and martial arts.

Foundation of a Bazi Chart

In Bazi reading, each chart consists of the Heavenly Stems (天干) and the Earthly Branches (地支), each of which is associated with the Five Elements and has its own Yin and Yang polarities.

​The Four Pillars of a Bazi chart serve multiple interpretative functions:

  • Life Stages: The Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars correspond to foundational years, adolescence, adulthood, and senior years, respectively.

  • Family Relationships: The pillars represent grandparents (Year), parents (Month), self and spouse (Day), and children (Hour).

  • Health Correlations: The pillars are linked to specific body areas—Year (head/neck), Month (chest/upper torso), Day (abdomen/digestive system), and Hour (lower limbs).

Interpretation of a Bazi Chart

In Bazi (八字), the Chart Structure—known in Chinese as 格局 (gé jú)—is one of the most fundamental concepts in chart analysis. The term "gé jú" can be translated as "framework," "configuration," or "pattern," and it refers to the specific way in which the elements of a chart are organized.

Rather than simply listing the components of a chart, the Chart Structure reveals the underlying hierarchy and relationships between them. It acts as the blueprint for understanding how energy flows within the chart and what themes are likely to dominate a person's life.

To determine the Chart Structure, one must first identify the dominant or primary element—often found within the Day Master (the self)—and then analyze how it interacts with the other Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. This includes examining which elements are supporting, controlling, or weakening the primary force, thereby shaping the unique destiny of the individual.
